Kirsty-Louise Card

Author. Blogger. Journalist.

"Choose success over PCOS."

Kirsty-Louise Card is an independent author, blogger and journalist based in the West Midlands. Kirsty has been a passionate writer from a young age and had published two novels by the time she was 19.

In pursuit of a career in journalism, she moved from Sunderland to Birmingham and completed a BA(Hons) Media and Communications: Journalism degree in July 2019. Before her course was over, she landed her first job as a Facebook Community Reporter for Birmingham Live, Reach PLC where she was trained to become an NCTJ Accredited Journalist.

In March 2021, Kirsty started working as a News Reporter for the national newspaper, Daily Star also within Reach PLC, before changing to a role in Video News at the same title in May 2022.

However, 2024 brought a host of new challenges. Kirsty took on the role of Social News Reporter in Reach PLC's Central Content Hub in May and also a part-time data journalism internship with the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism between May and December. In October, she decided to leave Reach PLC and join National World's Express & Star title in Wolverhampton, West Midlands as a Digital Content Manager.

Even with a full-time career and volunteer work, she maintains her passion for fiction and has also been a blogger for the reproductive charity, Cysters.org since 2017 after being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

During the final year of her undergraduate degree, Kirsty was listed as one of Birmingham Live's 30 under 30 - an achievement she made at the age of 21 for her work as an author, blogging, and running student data news site, The Briti, in her final year of university.

When her life isn't focused on her writing or vlogging, she enjoys reading, cross stitching, dancing, make-up, the gym and even dabbles in plus-size modelling... but none of that beats a strong cup of tea!

"Kirsty had a really good week with us. She managed her time very well and was full of ideas. She also showed real commitment by attending a refugee event outside of work, where she interviewed three people for an excellent feature which we published. Kirsty also showed excellent investigative skills by researching and writing a story about hacking, which is also published. Overall, we were very impressed with her attitude and her performance and would welcome her back."

"Kirsty has worked for Cysters for a year and has generated amazing content and has a brilliant work ethic. She has shown initiative and has helped progress Cysters within her University as well as externally. The content is always of high quality and thoroughly research. I would recommend Kirsty to any future employer. She will be an asset to your team."

"Kirsty is a hard-working aspiring journalist, who has a keen nose for a story. Coupled with her passion for data journalism and a flair for story-telling, I have no doubt that she has a bright future in the profession."

"Kirsty joined the Johnston Press North East newsroom for work experience in July and hugely impressed during her time with us. What particularly stood out was the fact she had taken time to work on some of her own stories to bring into the office with her. That showed a high level of motivation and forward planning that was commendable. Many students can be reactive when they visit, waiting for things to be passed their way, whereas Kirsty had a proactive approach. She was polite, punctual and enthusiastic about whatever tasks she was given. If she continues to progress like this, I have no doubt she will make a fine journalist for whoever is lucky enough to employ her. Kirsty would certainly be welcome back in the JPNE newsroom any time."

"Kirsty worked hard during her placement and completed all the tasks given to her diligently. Over the course of the week she took on tips (mainly about house style which would have been different to the ones on her previous placements) and produced some good reader-friendly copy. It was particularly impressive that she found her own stories to write as we have a lot of work experience placements (we have had more than 40 this year so far) and not many do that. She was rewarded during and at the end of the week with several published pieces on our websites and in the printed version of the paper. Kirsty would be well suited to newspaper journalism if this was the career she wanted to pursue after her graduation."
