Burnt toast and faulty alarms have been named as the most common causes of ‘false alarms’ raised to West Midlands Fire Service, new data shows.

Official figures have detailed the circumstances behind 26,016 reports made to the emergency service between 2021 and 2022.

One-third (8,553) of the callouts were discovered to be false alarms with the most common being from ‘cooking/burnt toast’ (23% of false alarms) and fire alarm faults (18%) coming in second.
